What is Revolut RevPoints Spare Change?
RevPoints Spare Change is an optional Revolut feature that rounds up supported card payments and uses the round-up amount to purchase RevPoints. The money comes from your account rather than being awarded as a free loyalty bonus.
For example, if you pay €2.46 for a coffee and the payment is rounded up to €3.00, the difference is €0.54. With RevPoints Spare Change enabled at the basic round-up setting, that amount can be used to buy points at the conversion terms applicable to your account.
You still pay the original purchase amount to the merchant. The extra amount is allocated towards acquiring RevPoints. It is therefore important to distinguish the merchant payment from the separate amount used for points.
Revolut also offers round-up features for other purposes, such as adding money to certain Pockets or savings products. RevPoints Spare Change is different because the round-up amount is exchanged for loyalty points rather than remaining in a cash savings balance.
The most important fact about Spare Change
RevPoints obtained through Spare Change are purchased using your own money. They should not be added to regular card-spending rewards as if they were free points. Review the conversion terms and round-up settings before enabling the feature.
How does RevPoints Spare Change work?
The feature connects a supported card payment with a separate round-up amount. Revolut then uses that amount to acquire RevPoints according to the relevant purchase terms.
Make a supported card payment
You pay a merchant using a Revolut card linked to your account. The amount may contain a fractional currency component, such as €2.46.
Calculate the round-up difference
At the basic setting, a supported euro payment of €2.46 is rounded to the next whole euro, producing a difference of €0.54.
Apply your selected settings
If you selected a multiplier, the amount used for purchasing RevPoints can be increased. The exact settings available depend on your account and app.
Acquire RevPoints
The applicable amount is used to buy points at the exchange rate and conditions shown by Revolut. The number of points acquired depends on those terms.
The rounding increment is not identical for every currency. Revolut publishes different rounding rules for certain currencies, so international users should not assume that all payments are rounded to the next single currency unit.
RevPoints Spare Change examples
The examples below show how a basic 1x round-up amount can be calculated for ordinary euro payments. They illustrate the money used to buy points, not the number of points received.
| Card purchase | Rounded amount | Money used for RevPoints |
|---|---|---|
| €2.46 | €3.00 | €0.54 |
| €5.60 | €6.00 | €0.40 |
| €8.25 | €9.00 | €0.75 |
| €12.90 | €13.00 | €0.10 |
| €19.35 | €20.00 | €0.65 |
These are fictional purchase amounts illustrating the standard euro round-up calculation. They do not represent actual account transactions, guaranteed charges or point purchase rates. Multipliers and country-specific rules can change the result.
In the first example, the merchant receives the original €2.46 payment, while the illustrative additional €0.54 is used for the RevPoints purchase. The amount of RevPoints received must be determined using the applicable rate displayed by Revolut.
Round-up amount and points earned are not the same thing
A €0.54 round-up is an amount of money, not 0.54 RevPoints. The number of points acquired depends on the specific exchange rate and purchase conditions shown in the app.
What is the RevPoints Spare Change multiplier?
Revolut offers a multiplier setting that increases the round-up amount used to purchase points. This can cause you to spend more money on RevPoints with each supported card payment.
A multiplier does not make the points free or increase the merchant’s original purchase price. Instead, it increases the separate amount allocated towards buying RevPoints.
| Example setting | Basic round-up | Illustrative points purchase amount |
|---|---|---|
| 1x | €0.40 | €0.40 |
| 2x | €0.40 | €0.80 |
| 3x | €0.40 | €1.20 |
| 5x | €0.40 | €2.00 |
| 10x | €0.40 | €4.00 |
This table demonstrates multiplication mathematically, not a verified list of multipliers available to every RevPoints account. The settings and processing rules displayed in your app take precedence.
Revolut’s official instructions explain that a multiplier increases the amount used to buy points. Customers can manage the setting in the Spare Change section of the app.
A higher multiplier may make a small purchase trigger a much larger points purchase amount. That is why checking the setting matters, especially if you make frequent card payments.
Check your multiplier if points purchases seem unexpectedly high
If more money is being used for RevPoints than you expected, review whether a multiplier is active. A multiplier changes the amount spent on points; it does not make each RevPoint worth more.
How much money can Spare Change use in a month?
The total depends on how often you pay by card, your payment amounts, the currency’s rounding rules and the multiplier you select.
Someone making many small card purchases could generate round-ups frequently. Even modest amounts can add up over a month, especially with a multiplier greater than 1x.
FICTIONAL MONTHLY ROUND-UP EXAMPLE
40 card payments with an average €0.50 basic round-up
€20
Illustrative monthly amount used to buy points at 1x
40 payments multiplied by €0.50
This is an invented budgeting example, not an actual Revolut customer or verified points offer. Actual amounts and available settings vary. No points conversion rate is assumed.
In this hypothetical situation, the customer would use €20 during the month to buy RevPoints at the basic 1x setting. At a hypothetical 3x multiplier, the amount would become €60.
That money is not simply moved into a regular savings balance. It is used for a loyalty points purchase, so the transaction should be evaluated differently from transferring spare change into savings.
How many RevPoints do you get from Spare Change?
The amount of points purchased depends on the exchange rate applicable to the customer and the amount allocated by the round-up feature.
Revolut’s terms instruct customers to review the exchange rate shown when enabling Spare Change. The applicable rules can vary between markets and programme versions, so there is no reliable reason to assume one universal purchase rate across every country.
To understand a particular purchase, inspect the rate offered by Revolut and the number of points you will receive before enabling the feature or accepting a change.
Does the Spare Change purchase rate equal the redemption value?
No. The amount you pay to acquire RevPoints is not a guarantee that you can later redeem those points for an equivalent cash saving.
RevPoints do not have a fixed cash value. A reward’s practical benefit depends on the number of points required, the price of an equivalent alternative and any additional fees or restrictions.
Buying points does not guarantee a profit or saving
Before buying RevPoints through Spare Change, compare the total money you expect to spend with the realistic benefit of a reward you actually want. The purchase cost and the eventual redemption value are different figures.
Our RevPoints Value Guide explains how to calculate the practical value of a specific redemption without inventing a fixed cash rate.
Spare Change vs regular RevPoints earning
The two activities may be associated with the same card purchase, but they work differently and should be kept separate when evaluating your rewards.
| Feature | Regular card spending rewards | Spare Change |
|---|---|---|
| How points are received | Awarded for qualifying card purchases | Purchased using round-up money |
| Separate points purchase | No | Yes |
| Main rate | Depends on plan, country and eligible card | Depends on points purchase terms |
| Optional multiplier | Not part of the regular rate | May increase round-up spending |
| Refund rules | Purchase refunds can reverse earned points | Purchased points are generally non-refundable, subject to applicable rights |
For example, an eligible supermarket purchase could generate regular RevPoints under your plan’s earning rate while also triggering a separate Spare Change points purchase if the feature is enabled.
The regular points award and the points purchased through the round-up are not interchangeable concepts. Counting purchased points as free earnings would exaggerate the apparent benefit of the loyalty programme.
Our How to Earn RevPoints Guide covers the other supported earning activities in more detail.
How to turn off RevPoints Spare Change
Revolut says you can deactivate Spare Change in the app. Disabling it stops further points purchases through the feature, but it does not automatically refund points already bought.
Open RevPoints
Sign in to the Revolut app and navigate to the RevPoints section using the menu available on your device.
Open your earning settings
In Revolut’s published Spare Change instructions, tap Earn below your points balance, or use the RevPoints settings area shown in newer app layouts.
Select Spare Change
Find the Spare Change feature or its toggle in the available RevPoints earning options.
Deactivate the feature
Choose Deactivate or switch the Spare Change setting off, depending on the app interface, and verify that the setting is disabled.
The exact navigation can vary between app versions. Revolut’s help pages describe both an Earn > Spare Change route and a RevPoints settings toggle. Use the instructions matching the interface shown on your account.
Turning Spare Change off does not cancel RevPoints participation
Disabling the round-up feature is not the same as closing your RevPoints account. Your ability to earn or redeem through other activities depends on the programme terms and which features Revolut makes available to your account.
For the latest instructions, consult Revolut’s official Spare Change help page.
How to enable or change Spare Change settings
If the feature is available to your account, you can manage activation and any supported multiplier through the Revolut app.
Open RevPoints, locate the earning or settings area and select Spare Change. Review the purchase rate and applicable conditions before choosing the option to enable the feature.
If multiplier settings are available, select the amount you intend to use and save the setting. Be aware that increasing the multiplier can increase the money spent on points after card payments.
If you previously directed round-ups into a Pocket or savings product, check the destination of future round-ups before switching to RevPoints. Buying points is not the same as saving cash.
Review the setting before confirming
Check the conversion rate, multiplier, destination of round-ups and the terms governing purchased points. Do not enable the feature merely because a large number of points is advertised.
Can you get a refund for RevPoints bought with Spare Change?
Revolut’s Spare Change help pages describe points purchased through round-ups as non-refundable. The applicable RevPoints legal terms may provide specific statutory withdrawal rights.
This means that switching the feature off generally prevents additional round-up purchases but does not by itself reverse previous points purchases.
Some published programme terms describe a limited withdrawal right following initial RevPoints enrolment, subject to the conditions and unused points requirements specified in those terms. Those rights should not be confused with a general ability to undo individual points purchases whenever desired.
If you believe a points purchase was unauthorised, incorrect or subject to an applicable withdrawal right, review the official terms for your country and contact Revolut Support.
Keep purchase and refund rules separate
A merchant refund does not automatically mean that a separate Spare Change points purchase will be refunded. Follow Revolut’s applicable terms and request account-specific clarification where necessary.
Do Spare Change RevPoints expire?
RevPoints purchased through Spare Change remain subject to the applicable programme validity and account rules. Paying for points does not make them equivalent to an ordinary cash balance.
Revolut’s published personal RevPoints terms in the reviewed markets generally describe a three-year points validity period. Confirm the expiry dates displayed for your account, including any specific terms affecting purchased points.
Closing a Revolut or RevPoints account can also affect an unused balance. Review the relevant conditions before closing an account or leaving purchased points unused for long periods.
Our RevPoints Expiry Guide covers validity dates and the rules governing expiring points.
Is Revolut RevPoints Spare Change worth it?
The answer depends on the cost of buying points, the rewards you can actually redeem and whether you would prefer to keep the money available for other purposes.
Calculate your points purchase cost
Review the exchange rate displayed in the app and estimate how much money your round-ups and chosen multiplier could use.
Choose a realistic reward
Check which airline miles transfers, travel discounts, gift cards or other rewards are actually available to your account.
Compare the real benefit
Evaluate what the reward would save compared with a similar purchase without points, including fees and booking restrictions.
Consider the refund and expiry rules
Remember that purchased points are generally non-refundable, subject to applicable rights, and are not guaranteed to remain valid indefinitely.
Buying RevPoints may suit customers with a specific redemption in mind, but it is not inherently a way to save money. Without knowing the applicable purchase rate and realistic redemption benefit, no guaranteed advantage can be calculated.
Spare Change is optional
You do not need to buy additional points merely because you participate in RevPoints. However, Revolut notes that activating Spare Change may provide access to certain additional programme activities in some circumstances, so review the specific options available to your account.

Frequently asked questions about RevPoints Spare Change
Answers to common questions about round-ups, costs, multipliers, purchased points and deactivation.
What is RevPoints Spare Change?
It is an optional feature that rounds up supported card payments and uses the difference to buy RevPoints. The round-up is funded with your own money.
Is Revolut RevPoints Spare Change free?
No. Although RevPoints enrolment itself may be free, Spare Change uses money from your account to purchase loyalty points. It is not a free bonus on top of your regular spending rewards.
How does Spare Change round up purchases?
For a typical euro purchase of €2.46 at the basic 1x setting, Revolut’s example method rounds the amount to €3.00 and uses the €0.54 difference to acquire points. Rules can vary by currency and account settings.
What does a Spare Change multiplier do?
It increases the money allocated to purchasing RevPoints through card-payment round-ups. A higher multiplier can increase spending on points, so review the setting carefully.
How much does one RevPoint cost through Spare Change?
The applicable purchase rate is governed by the terms for your market and the offer shown in your Revolut app. Do not assume a universal exchange rate across all countries or that the purchase cost equals the eventual redemption value.
How do I turn off RevPoints Spare Change?
Open RevPoints, locate the earning or Spare Change settings and choose Deactivate or turn the appropriate toggle off. The navigation may vary depending on the app version.
Can I keep earning regular RevPoints without Spare Change?
Regular RevPoints earning and Spare Change purchases are different activities. Eligible customers may continue collecting points through supported card purchases without buying points through round-ups, although access to certain other features may depend on programme conditions.
Can I get my Spare Change money back?
Revolut generally describes points acquired using Spare Change as non-refundable. Specific statutory withdrawal rights may apply under the relevant programme terms. Deactivating the feature does not automatically refund earlier purchases.
Is Spare Change the same as putting money into a Pocket?
No. With a cash Pocket or savings round-up, the money is directed into the relevant account or product. With RevPoints Spare Change, the money is used to buy loyalty points.
Do Spare Change purchases count towards regular earning rates?
No. Purchased points should be treated separately from points awarded for qualifying card spending. The regular earning rate depends on the account country, plan and eligible card type.
Do RevPoints purchased through Spare Change expire?
Purchased RevPoints remain subject to the applicable programme and expiry rules. Check your balance, issue dates and relevant conditions in your Revolut app.
Is it worth enabling RevPoints Spare Change?
That depends on the purchase cost, how much the feature would spend from your account and the practical value of rewards you intend to redeem. It does not guarantee a financial saving.
Calculate RevPoints earned without buying extra points
Estimate the regular points available from eligible spending on your Revolut plan. Keep Spare Change purchases separate so you can understand how many points are awarded and how much money you choose to spend acquiring additional points.
